Douglasville is the Douglas County seat, strung along I-20 west of Atlanta, and Medina Concrete drives down from Powder Springs in about 20 to 25 minutes to work here. As a concrete contractor Douglasville families call, most of our jobs in town come down to one thing: a yard that is not flat.
Homes north of the interstate climb and drop with the hills, and a lot of houses have a walkout basement in back with the ground falling steeply away from it. That is where people need a wall to hold the slope, a set of concrete steps instead of a muddy path, or a slab under the deck so the space below gets used.
Francisco Medina gives every Douglasville estimate in person. He looks at how high the grade change is, where the water goes in a storm, and what you want the space to do before he suggests a wall height or a slab size. Neighbors to the east are on our Lithia Springs page.
On a Douglasville hillside a wall is what turns a bank of clay into a level yard. We set the first course on a solid footing, backfill with gravel and give the water behind the wall a way out, since trapped water is what pushes walls over.
A patio off a walkout basement often has to be built up or cut in to sit level. We form it to the grade you have, pitch it away from the house and can tie it into a wall or steps in the same job.
Steep side yards in Douglasville often have no safe way down to the back. Poured concrete steps and a walkway along the house give you a path that does not wash out every time it rains.
Raised decks are common on sloped lots where the back door sits a full story above the yard. We build the deck and can pour the slab underneath so the shaded space below is dry and usable.
Much of Douglasville outside the downtown grid was built into rolling ground, and the drop from front yard to back yard can be a full floor. Builders graded just enough to set the house, which leaves plenty of steep backyards where grass will not hold and mulch washes onto the lawn below.
Before we design a wall we measure the grade change across the whole run. A short wall can be a single row of block on a gravel footing, while a taller one needs a deeper base, more courses and careful drainage behind it. We tell you plainly which one your yard needs.
Older Downtown Streets and Newer Subdivisions
Close to downtown Douglasville the houses are older, with narrow front walks and steps that have shifted and cracked over the decades. Replacing a broken stoop or a heaved sidewalk is a small job that makes the front of an older house safer to walk up.
Farther out, the subdivisions built around the I-20 interchanges have their own pattern: walkout basements, raised decks and lots of backyard that slopes toward a creek or the woods. Those homes keep us busy with walls, steps and patios that work with the hill instead of fighting it.
Rain, Clay and Pricing a Douglasville Job
Georgia storms can drop a lot of water fast, and on a slope that water picks up speed. We think about where runoff will go after the job, whether that means a drain behind a wall or a slab pitched toward a safe spot in the yard.
Cost here depends mostly on how much digging and backfill the slope takes, how tall the wall is, and how hard it is to get material down into the yard. Francisco writes out the options at the estimate, at no charge.
Why Douglasville Homeowners Call Us
Worth the drive down. We travel to Douglasville from Powder Springs, about 20 to 25 minutes, for walls, patios, steps and decks.
Drainage comes first. Every wall and slab on a slope gets a plan for where the water goes, because that is what decides how long it lasts.
A real look at the grade. Francisco measures the slope himself and explains the footing and wall height your yard calls for.
Se habla español. Call and speak with the owner in English or Spanish.
Yes. We travel to Douglasville from our base in Powder Springs, a drive of about 20 to 25 minutes. Francisco gives free estimates in Douglas County Monday through Friday.
My Douglasville backyard is a steep slope. What can be done with it?
A retaining wall can hold the slope and give you a flat area to use, and concrete steps can give you a safe way down. Many sloped lots also have room for a patio under a raised deck. Francisco measures the grade at the estimate and explains what fits.
What is the going rate for a retaining wall?
Retaining walls are priced by the job, not a flat rate. Wall height, length, the type of block or poured concrete, how much digging and gravel backfill it takes, and how hard it is to get material into the yard all move the price. Francisco gives a free written estimate after he measures the slope.
What are the three types of retaining walls?
The common types on homes are gravity walls that hold soil with their own weight, segmental block walls, and poured concrete walls. Which one makes sense depends on the height, the load behind it and the look you want.
How thick should concrete be for a sidewalk?
A walkway for foot traffic is thinner than a driveway, and the base under it matters as much as the thickness. On clay we compact the ground and add gravel so the walk does not heave or crack. Francisco will spec it at the estimate.
How much would a 20x20 deck cost to build?
It depends on how high the deck sits off the ground, the stairs and railing it needs, the boards you choose and whether you want a concrete slab underneath. Higher decks on sloped lots take more framing. Every estimate is free.
